Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge

Watching the Amazing Structures series on the National Geographic Channel is a grand experience. One recent episode was featuring the World's Longest supsension bridge that connects Japan's Kobe island to the main-land.

The documentary covered the planning and execution. The deadline met despite one of the worst ever earth quakes hit the site and displaced the load bearing towers by whole of three feet! The cables were laid by a helicopter, etc. etc. The cost of the bridge turned out to be $4 billion.

I wonder if all of it had ended as a failure, if the engineer-in-chief would have been suspended!
