May I?

There are mathematically n* number of memories from Prof R Vittal Rao sir's class. One such comes to my active memory space now:

He was very particular about mathematical language. Mathematicians are lazy people, he used to say. And therefore they come up with extremely concise description of problems, and well, their solutions too. Dwelling upon usage of language, he once told us a story of a British professor.

The aforementioned professor had a very bright student, who was polite in his mannerism and behaviour. One day after tea he offered to clean up the cups.

"Can I clear this cup away, sir?," he asked.

"Not only you can, but also you may," the professor replied!

I love English language!
